Vote: Most Underrated Song From ‘Rock Steady’

Up next, we’re curious which track from No Doubt’s most ambitious and fifth album, Rock Steady, do you find the most underrated? Rock Steady is one of those albums that still comes across as fresh and harbors a lot of gems and huge hits from the band.

Rock Steady came out in December 2001 and peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. The album spawned many fan favorites and successful hits for the band including “Hey Baby”, “Hella Good”, “Underneath It All” and “Running”. The album has sold over 3 million copies worldwide and earned No Doubt two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (both for “Hey Baby” and “Underneath It All”.)

Most notable tracks: “Hella Good”, “Hey Baby”, “Underneath It All”, “Running”

Previous polls:

Most underrated song from Return of Saturn?
Most underrated song from Tragic Kingdom?
Most underrated song from The Beacon Street Collection?
Most underrated song from No Doubt?

For our next series of polls, we’re curious which song from each of No Doubt’s albums do you find the most underrated. We’re trying to put together a comprehensive list of the band’s best “unheard” and overlooked tracks — and because it sounds like a fun topic to discuss!

We’re not asking fans to necessarily vote for their favorite songs or the “hits”, but which tracks are most overlooked and what they would like to see the band revisit. Some material has yet to be performed at all really (i.e. “Dark Blue”, “World Go ‘Round”, “Waiting Room”, most of Push and Shove) which, in our opinion, deserves a chance to be heard live. But… we are also saying that some of these tracks may not be considered as strong as some either.

We hope to have new polls up every few days in the next couple of weeks for each album. Once all of the votes are tallied, we’ll put together a massive post with the top picks. After submitting your vote, please feel free to leave a comment and let us know why you picked which track — we’re wanting to include comments from our visitors in the results post. If this is successful, we also plan on holding a “tournament” of sorts to find out which the top No Doubt songs of all-time are.

  1. I picked STF but DLMD is truly the most underrated song, was used as the alternative single for Hey Baby in promotional use on KROQ and probably other stations.

  2. Start the fire is one of my top 5 favorite ND songs, and In My Head is literally the exact same thoughts I have about my boyfriend…I love love LOVE those songs!

  3. Not a huge fan of start the fire. Probably my least favourite track. I love DLMD but Making Out had the most hit potential out of the non singles so I voted for it. They definitely should add one of the two or alternate them at these summer festivals! Great fun catchy songs that are perfect for the summer stage.

  4. This one was easy for me. Rock Steady is my all-time favorite No Doubt song. I’ve seen it live a couple of times, and both times Gwen said that it was one of her favorites, too. I’ll never tire of that song. Perfection.

  5. Yeah Waiting Room would be the most underrated I think- though my favorite song is PBL, that one has at least been played live.

  6. I mean, yeah, I voted for Rock Steady because it is my favorite ND song of all time, and it also happens to be very underrated, in my opinion. It didn’t get any airplay that I know of, and while it has been performed in concerts some, it’s for sure not a staple. In my opinion, Rock Steady deserved way more attention that it got – i.e. it is an underrated song. It just so happens that it is also my favorite.

  7. That’s what “underrated” means, right? A great song that didn’t get the attention that it deserved? Yes, Rock Steady is the title track for the album, but I don’t know any average, non-ND-mega-fans that have even ever heard it. That’s a shame. It’s an amazing song.

  8. I think the album got a more than fair amount of attention during the era, but I wish they would re-incorporate the non-singles into their setlist. Anyway, I guess Waiting Room would be the obvious choice, but I don’t think it’s a great song to begin with. So I chose Detective with Running being a close 2nd!

  9. What I’m curious to know is why people voted for Hella Good or UIA? The two tracks that are played at every show and were singles and are loved by every fan? lol

  10. This was kinda hard! I always thought making out should’ve gotten some live attention during the rock steady tour. I also never cared for running as a single, I think they had way better options

  11. I’m actually surprised people are voting for PBL. It’s a fan favourite and No Doubt played it several times.

  12. I don’t know which song to pick. Obviously “Waiting Room” is underrated, but I just don’t like this song very much. It always felt like an unnecessary bonus track. I guess I’m going with “Detective”.

  13. YYY I feel the same about Waiting Room. It didn’t fit in with the rest of the album. I’m not a Prince fan anyway.

  14. I see a lot of people voting for Waiting Room– I never liked that one. I never connected to it. It’s a little off beat for me.

  15. I want to like WR but I don’t:/ to mean underrated means a song that you think is really good but wasn’t publicized and /or received my the masses. Since we are real ‘no doubters’ here, most of our faves are the underrated/b sides:) I live STF for the reggae vibe… When they announced Gwen spark single (before I had heard it), I momentarily got super excited and thought she was doing a version of START the fire. I felt really dumb after I realized lol

  16. Personally, I think Waiting Room is the worst song ever. Not just the worst song from RS but from all of ND’s songs. And not far behind is Gravity.

  17. I really didn’t like Waiting Room at first. It just didn’t sound at all like No Doubt to me. But I’ve come to appreciate the groove and the melody. I think it fits in well with the rest of Rock Steady.

  18. I doubt so many people like Waiting Room. My guess is that just one person is voting over and over for it, lol.
I remember different threads from the old forum when asked about the least favorite song from RS, most always mentioned Waiting Room. But heck, maybe they’ve grown to like it. But I sure don’t 😀

  19. ^ That’s why I say it’s underrated. I doubt the same person is voting for the same song. It’s not that big difference from PBL or Making Out.

  20. Or in this case Don’t Let Me Down, which is the 2nd most voted song. I can see why people are voting for WR though. I think most fans used to “hate” it cause it was mostly re-worked by Prince, but imo it’s a great song. Anyway I really hope we can hear the original version from the ROS sessions someday.

  21. I don’t “hate” WR, but I think it just didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the album. RS has a very good flow until WR comes on lol. It’s not a bad song, it’s just not a ND song at all and I think it didn’t do anything for the album. It’s like they just put an old Prince demo on the album. I’m not surprised they never performed WR live, because it’s basically just a duet of Gwen and Prince.

  22. I feel the exact same way about it YYY. I listen to it a few times a year in hopes that I might end up liking it more, but I never do which is why I don’t think it’s underrated. I don’t hate it, but I can see why they struggled with it. WR would have been better suited for the EIT album.

  23. YYY and Amanda that’s exactly what I’d say “Waiting Room” is. lol But it’s ok you don’t like it.

underestimate the extent, value, or importance of (someone or something).
    “a very underrated film”
synonyms: undervalue, underestimate, set little store by, rate too low, not do justice to, do an injustice to, be wrong about, sell short, play down, understate, minimize, de-emphasize, underemphasize, diminish, downgrade, reduce, lessen, brush aside, gloss over, trivialize; etc

  24. Random question: I’ve heard time ago that You’re so foxy was meant to be the first single of Rock Steady, is that true?
