Song Saturday: “Staring Problem”

For this week’s Song Saturday, we’re looking back at one of the more faster-paced tracks from Return of Saturn, “Staring Problem”.

Notably one of the last songs to be co-written with No Doubt co-founder Eric Stefani, “Staring Problem” was first mentioned in October 1999 and was debuted live on the band’s west coast club tour. The track was said to be a throwback to the band’s earlier sound and featured a catchy chorus of Gwen spelling out “S-T-A-R-I-N-G” over blaring horns and guitars.

The band embraced the song on tour and continued to perform “Staring Problem” all around the world including notable performances in Japan and Germany.

Lyrics

My eyes are so rootless
They wander, I follow
I keep staring , I can’t stop it
I know I shouldn’t
But I can’t stop it

Such a cute girl
I’m so jealous
I wish I looked exactly like her
What’s it like to have that body?
I’m gawking while I wonder

S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring
S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring

With my envy I steal glances
Resentful fault finder
This peek-a-boo’s become a problem
Predisposed cat fighter

S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring
S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring

S-T-A-R-I-N-G
P-R-O-B-L-E-M

S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring
S-T-A-R-I-N-G
I can’t stop staring

  1. Love how honest this song is Gwen is one of the best song writers in history when she writes like she did for ROS ND please do another album like ROS…

  2. I feel like this song was out of place on the album too. It has a cheesy-ness to it (that I think Eric Stefani is always responsible for) where it would sound more suitable on the ‘self titled’ album

  3. Really? I just love the fact that they added one last Eric song while recording ROS. Also, it fits the theme on Gwen being insecure and all…

    1. I agree. I feel like “Staring Problem” is like a breath of fresh air on the album (which is one of my favorites) especially how it’s presented in the tracklisting order.

  4. Exactly! It fits in with the theme of Gwen’s self esteem issues as described in many of the ROS songs but it is a refreshingly perky tune among the heavier stuff. I definitely like the last half of the album tracks best.

  5. The lyrics fit in but not the sound of the song. It has a Ska like feel to it that would fit in better on their earlier albums in my opinion!
