In honor of No Doubt performing tomorrow night’s KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas, we’re looking back at their classic Christmas cover of “Oi To The World” for this week’s Song Saturday, originally written and recorded by The Vandals.
While touring in India, No Doubt filmed a music video for “Oi To The World” with Sophie Muller. Though not released as an official single domestically, a Swedish-import CD single, as a B-side for “Happy Now?”, was released in January 1997. The band re-released “Oi To The World” for their B-sides collection Everything In Time in 2003. No Doubt also included the music video on their The Videos: 1992-2003 DVD.
No Doubt recored their own take on the punk-holiday track in 1997 for A Very Special Christmas 3, a series of compliation albums benefiting the Special Olympics. Production was overseen by Jimmy Iovine and their cover was produced by The Vandal’s own, Warren Fitzgerald. The band hit the studio while on tour to record “Oi To The World” and performed it more than a handful of times on the Tragic Kingdom tour (while inviting The Vandals onstage whom were touring with No Doubt at the time) and including a couple of notable television performances on both MTV’s Live N’ Loud and VH1’s Race to Erase MS Benefit in the fall of 1997.
In 2000, No Doubt performed a special version of the song for KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas which opened their set with a medley including the traditional holiday classic “Good King Wenceslas” leading into “Oi To The World”.
