Song Saturday: “Hey You”

For this week’s edition of Song Saturday, we’re looking back at a much loved track by both the band and fans, Tragic Kingdom‘s “Hey You”.

“Hey You” is said to have been one of the songs written around “Snakes” (which was released on The Beacon Street Collection) and was inspired by familiar guitar chords by Gwen. In a role reversal situation in the writing sessions, Gwen came up with most of the melody on her own with Tony singing the lyrics. Its noted that Gwen took inspiration from The Smiths’ “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” for the melody. Though the album version features a full electric sound on the song, the alternate acoustic version is more like the original the band had been working on. “Hey You” brought new sounds to the album in which No Doubt hadn’t worked with before including a sitar.

One of the earliest performances of the song came from the band’s special acoustic set with Irvine’s own underground radio station, KUCI, in 1994.

On tour, No Doubt strayed away from the electric version of “Hey You” and performed the song mostly acoustic, including the latest performance of it in 2012. The band did treat fans to a full sound version of the song during select dates on the Rock Steady tour.

The alternate acoustic version was recorded and released for the single releases for “Don’t Speak”. These special tracks (including “Don’t Speak”) were recorded in 1996 while the band was in Auckland, New Zealand and feature only Gwen, Tom and Gabrial McNair.

Though not domestically released, No Doubt released “Hey You” as the seventh and final single from Tragic Kingdom on February 23, 1998 in the Netherlands only, peaking at #51. A music video was also put together featuring footage from the band’s Live in the Tragic Kingdom video, directed by Sophie Muller, to promote the single.

Lyrics

Hey you, with the wedding dress on
Made of white chiffon blowing in the wind
Hey you, with the dreams in your head
You’ve been so mislead by your heart’s pull

I know you’re waiting for your ship to come in
You anxiously wait for such a long time

You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

Hey you, with your eyes full of hope
You think you can rope your desire
Well hey you, you naive thing
Your patience in turn will tire

I know you’re thinking that your tide will roll in
How did you ever get such high hopes?

You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
In a plastic world of make believe
You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You know he’s just gonna leave
(Gonna leave)

Hey you, hey you, hey you

I know you’re waiting for your life to begin
Well wake up girl, you’ve got it all wrong
You want a prize that you’re not gonna win
Oh face it girl, you’ve got it all wrong

You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
Oh ou’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

Oh you’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
In a plastic world of make believe
You’re just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You know he’s just gonna leave
