“Settle Down” Lyrics

We’ve done our best!

We’re still unsure what Gwen says during the breakdown of the song…

Get-get-get in line and settle down
Get-get-get in line and settle down
Get-get-get in line and settle down

What’s your twenty? (Do you copy?)
Where’s your brain? (Do you copy?)
Checking in to check you out
Concerned about your whereabouts

Copy that (Do you copy?)
You’re acting strange (Do you copy?)
So tell me what is going on
So heavy, I bet

I’m fine (nothin’s gonna knock this girl down)
I’m hella positive for real
I’m all good, no
I’m fine (nothin’s gonna knock this girl down)
It’s kind of complicated
That’s for sure

But you can see it in my eyes
You can read it on my lips
I’m trying to get a hold on this
I really mean it this time
And you know it’s such a trip
Don’t get me started
I’m trying to get a hold on this

Get-get-get in line and settle down
Get in line and settle down

No big deal (I can handle it)
It’ll bounce off me (I can handle it)
Been around the block before
Doesn’t matter anymore

Here we go again (Are you kidding me?)
Are you insane? (Are you kidding me?)
Underneath the avalanche, so heavy again

I’m fine (nothin’s gonna knock this girl down)
I’m hella positive for real
I’m all good, no
I’m fine (nothin’s gonna knock this girl down)
It’s kind of complicated
That’s for sure

But you can see it in my eyes
You can read it on my lips
I’m trying to get a hold on this
I really mean it this time
And you know it’s such a trip
Don’t get me started
I’m trying to get a hold on this

Get-get-get in line and settle down
Get in line and settle down

Gotcha, 10-4 …
Gotcha, 10-4 …
Gotcha, 10-4 …
Gotcha, 10-4 …

I’m a rough-and-tough
I’m a rough-and-tough
Nothin’s gonna knock this girl down
I’m a rough-and-tough
I’m a rough-and-tough
Nothin’s gonna knock this girl down

But you can see it in my eyes
You can read it on my lips
I’m trying to get a hold on this
I really mean it this time
And you know it’s such a trip
Don’t get me started
I’m trying to get a hold on this

Gotta get a hold on this
Trying to get a hold on this

Get-get-get in line and settle down
Get in line and settle down

  1. Doesn’t she say: Once you’re twenty, where’s your ring?
    I really don’t think it’s brain…that’s really strange…

  2. Sorry. People on the forum are saying those are the lyrics lol Well need to read the lyrics better and try to understand the context better. Thanks 🙂

  3. “What’s your Twenty, Where’s your brain” because Twenty means location in CB radio code and brain goes with the later insane lyrics in the song

  4. Thanks Jenny! Had no idea. After some research I found more info that helped me to clarify.

    This is interesting…
So “Twenty” means a location in CB radio code? (CB slang is the distinctive anti-language, argot or cant which developed amongst users of citizens’ band radio (CB), especially truck drivers in the USA during the 1970s and early-1980s.)
According to wikipedia “10-20” (more often simply “20”) Denotes location, as in identifying one’s location (“My 20 is on Main Street and First”), asking the receiver what their current location is (“What’s your 20?”), or inquiring about the location of a third person (“Ok, people, I need a 20 on Little Timmy and fast”).

  5. Married to a former truck driver…yes 20 and brain, like where the heck are you, what are you thinking! Even through ring does seem fitting too since it sounds like she is location checking on her man.

  6. I don’t think it’s about checking location on her man. I think it’s definitely asking where are you? And like I’m back I promise this time like in relation to Love Angel Music Baby and Wind it Up she is back and blah blah

  7. I’m thinking it’s about the mental war she went through both in her own mind and with the band when coming back together in the studio.
“What’s your 20? Where’s your brain?” Like, where is your head? Are you present in the studio and ready to make hits or are you still in your own Harajuku/Love Angel Music Baby/ Wind It Up/Fashion lines/Family/busy life?

They went through writers block and struggled to get this music going again. I think it’s her saying “I’m okay it’ll be alright let’s do it” but then like “it’s complicated” because it’s hard to just flip the switches after over 10 years of getting back in it all together and make great tunes.

She’s like “I’m trying to get a hold on this!” she’s trying to get it going but it’s hard

It obviously worke out because they’ve made the record and so far it sounds awesome, but this song is clearly like trying to get back into the No Doubt Zone together.

  8. This is what Gwen has said about it: “It’s actually about when you’re in trouble and you’re sort of trying to hide it inside, but you’re not [fine].”

  9. Not about the song, but I think it’s cool nonetheless:
When she says, “lover, lover, lover, lover” it sounds almost exactly like Gavin in the Chemicals Between Us when he says, “lovers, lovers, lovers, lovers, lovers”.
    🙂

  10. I think it’s “What’s your 20 where’s your brain” for sure because of the trucker reference and the song is about getting a grip and trying to pull herself together. Kinda like where’s your brain, guys, let’s do this! 🙂

  11. i think this song is about raising her boys… struggling with their rambunctious behavior and trying to get them to “settle down”. gwen herself has said that being a mother is really hard – that her boys wakeup and beat on each. she wanted to be a mother so badly and its obviously she loves it, but i think she has had to work really hard to “get a hold” on it.
