DrumsmackTV re-aired their interview with Adrian from June 11, 2013 on tonight’s episode. We captured the stream last night and shared Adrian’s portion. In the interview, Adrian talks about joining the band, saying he was a fan of No Doubt in high school. “I would go to shows. I first discovered them in 1987, the year when the band started. I would see them opening for bands like Fishone, [Red Hot] Chili Peppers and The Untouchables. My friends and I just loved the band.” Adrian asked his parents for a drum set the following year for Christmas. He auditioned for the band in 1989 and lied his way in getting into No Doubt saying he had been playing for eight years. Adrian admits that his first gig with the band was a backyard party and he says he “sucked really bad”.
Adrian calls his first recording experience “terrible” and recalls working with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), whom produced two early demos for the band. He says that he was having such a rough time (being inexperienced) and Flea was by his side trying to work through it with him. After recording the demos, Adrian says that he locked himself up for “months and months” practicing and working on his skills.
At this time, Adrian confirmed that No Doubt were back in the studio working on the band’s new album. In January of 2013, No Doubt went back into the studio to work on a few songs and found themselves “on a roll. We decided to postpone going on tour and stay on this roll because we haven’t made a lot of records in our career and how long we’ve been together. A similar thing happened in 2000-2001 with a record called Return of Saturn and went right in and recorded Rock Steady. I don’t think any of us thought it would take ten years to do Push and Shove, but it did, and now we’re rolling right into a new record.”
Adrian Tweeted that he will be interviewed and featured on tonight’s weekly TradioV LA’s Drumsmack TV.
