Season six coach of The Voice, Usher Raymond, encourages both Gwen and Pharrell Williams to be “motivated” on his win last night with contestant Josh Kaufman. Usher ended fellow coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine’s winning streak during the season six finale and credits being “unconventional” and staying true to who he’s always been as an artist.

Usher calls Gwen a “genius” and says that if she is as “true in [her] process of working with talent as [she is] with their creative, then it should work.” He says that he feels he’s opened the door for both Gwen and Pharrell to look for “completely different types of talent than the show has featured in the past.”

Pharrell admits that both himself and Gwen will be taking a different approach to the contestants for season seven than in the show’s past in an interview with The Today Show back on May 1.

Filming starts this June with an air date set for early Fall.
