Wow. Last night Gwen Tweeted about an upcoming fundraiser for friend and past tour dancer, Steelo Vasquez, and we wanted to help spread the news. Steelo recently suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm, then sadly four additional ruptures and lost his ability to walk and speak. This is so heartbreaking. I actually met him on The Sweet Escape tour and he is an amazing person. This incredible benefit being put together features so many amazing dance groups — The Jabawockeez, Beat Freaks (including Rino from the Harajuku Gilrs) and more. The net proceeds from ticket sales will be used to underwrite living expenses for Steelo and his family over the next year, during his rehabilitation. Please, if you are in the Beverly Hills area, I would consider checking out the show, it’s for such a great cause. More details have been posted on the official site.
There will also be a silent auction held at the event including No Doubt and Gwen items.
No Doubt — Many fans may remember the very talented dancer Steelo Vasquez who was featured in Gwen’s Early Winter video and also performed with her during The Sweet Escape Tour. Steelo recently suffered a life-threatening injury and the Los Angeles dance community is hosting a fundraiser on December 6th to benefit his recovery.
On June 19th, Steelo suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and had to undergo emergency surgery. During the operation and subsequent surgeries, Steelo suffered four additional ruptures and lost his ability to walk and speak. Today, Steelo remains in an extensive rehabilitation program where doctors are helping him relearn basic functions. His wife Penelope has constantly been by his side during the slow recovery in ICU. It was actually during a show on Gwen’s tour that Steelo proposed to his now wife, Penelope Vazquez. Their son just celebrated his 1st birthday.
Steelo’s friends, family and doctors are hopeful that through therapy he will make a full recovery over time.
On December 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills there will be an event to raise money for Steelo’s medical costs and to help support his wife and young son. The event will feature performances from some of the biggest names in the dance community including Jabbawockeez (MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew), Twitch (So You Think You Can Dance,) Team iLLuminate (America’s Got Talent) and Beat Freaks (featuring Music from the Harajuku Girls.) There will be a raffle and silent auction as well, including items from Gwen and No Doubt.
Looking back through my archives, I found these photo of Gwen and Steelo on the video shoot for “Early Winter.”
