No Doubt are wrapping up their festival tour tonight with their headlining set on the main stage for Kaaboo Del Mar in San Deigo. The band hit the stage around 8:25PM PST and performed another electric set for the inaugural music festival in southern California.

No Doubt performed a lengthy set bringing back “Settle Down”, “Push and Shove” and “End It On This”. We heard Gwen was as feisty as ever tonight and ended up climbing the rafters again for an energized version of “Just a Girl”. Gwen also dedicated “Happy Birthday” during the encore to her makeup artist Gregory Arlt.

Throughout the show, [Gwen] changed lyrics to make them more pointed. She referenced stinky, disgusting, narcissistic and pathetic boys during “Bathwater” mid-set. The next song, the “Tragic Kingdom” offering “Happy Now?,” found Stefani channeling her younger self. On the final lines, she changed “You have no one else/You’re by yourself” to “I got nobody else/I’m by myself.”

She introduced “Ex-Girlfriend” as “a song that never gets old,” too.

“What’s weird is that some of the songs have new meanings for me,” Stefani said at one point during the set.

Despite the sometimes heavy subject matter and thinly veiled barbs Stefani pointed at her ex, bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young were clearly enjoying being on the stage before Kaaboo’s largest crowd of the day. — PE

By the third song, “Underneath it All,” off of 2001’s “Rock Steady,” Stefani was wearing her heart on her sleeve, changing up the lyric “And when it’s really bad / I guess it’s not that bad” to “It’s really (bleepin’) bad.”

She kept her composure, but continued to launch the verbal torpedoes. “Simple Kind of Life,” a song which she noted “… is one of my favorite songs I wrote in my whole life,” got the acoustic treatment and yet another lyric change up after she sang the line “If we met tomorrow for the very first time/ Would it start all over again? / Would I try to make you mine?” she quipped “I don’t think so.”

“Bathwater” is where it got a bit awkward as she went off, asking herself why “good girls like me” always fall for the bad boys that are “stinky … pathetic … narcissistic” all of which seemed like some pretty strong jabs aimed directly at her soon-to-be ex husband.

After “Excuse Me Mr.” and “Sunday Morning,” the first two offerings in the set off 1995’s “Tragic Kingdom,” an album pretty much completely about Stefani’s break-up with Kanal, she said that it was weird that most of those tracks had suddenly now taken on an entirely new meaning. Kanal is probably slightly relieved by that since the heartbreak and rage are no longer directed solely at him.

The band also offered up a few cuts it hadn’t included in its sets for years from its breakthrough album including “Happy Now?” and “End it on This,” which seemed fitting for this evening since this could very well be the last time No Doubt performs together in a very long while since Stefani is deep in the process of working on her third solo album. — OC Register

We’ll keep updating the post with more photos and videos once we come across them!

  3. I’ve missed this energized and feisty Gwen…it’s too bad things had to go down in her personal life to bring this out of her though. Gosh I wish she’d use this energy and anger towards writing new ND music. Go back to the boys G! 😉

  4. I saw them at Kaaboo last night. They were sooooo amazing!!! Gwen was making jabs at Gavin which felt very empowering. I loved it all. Very energized and they all performed well too!!!

  5. End It On This boring?!? Whoa!

Just read the articles. It breaks my heart how she keeps changing the lyrics. She’s really hurt. At least she seems to be getting this out of her system. I can predict a very introspective solo album, now that she’s writing from her heart again.

  6. She changed the lyrics during New, also. She sang, I mean yelled, “Why am I so curious? This territory is dangerous! I’ll end up at the start, you just watch! I’ll be back in line, heartbroken… AGAIN!”
