Gwen graces the cover of InStyle magazine for December which features a brand new photo shoot and interview with her. We have to say the shoot is already one of our favorites and Gwen was photographed by Jan Welters in beautiful Canyon Country, California. Gwen appears in gorgeous couture pieces from Atelier Versace, Chanel, Valentino, and Carolina Herrera.

InStyle‘s Sarah Mesle met with Gwen at her home for the interview while she was cleaning out her closets (literally). Gwen has “archives” of boxes which hold past stage costumes and clothes that she kept over time, including her iconic Dior-designed wedding dress. Over the past few years, Gwen has felt like she’s “been in this cocoon” and now feels like she’s “ready to burst out with all these new creations”. InStyle references Gwen’s emotional interview with the TODAY show last spring (while promoting “Shine” alongside Pharrell Williams) in which she opened up about how much her marriage with Gavin and family meant to her saying, “We both want the same thing—to be married, to be good parents”. The article points out how trouble may have been brewing long before their announcement to separate saying, “it’s clear the brave front she put on was sometimes that—a front.”

Even though Gwen has been going through the worst of times, she gives off an aura of confidence and strength. InStyle shared that when Gavin was brought up during the interview, Gwen seemed to have no animosity towards him but did stress that their marriage wasn’t always easy. Gwen said that writing Push and Shove was a “super hard” at times for her since she felt torn between her family and being inspired with the band. She went on to say that there were some “incredible moments” while working on Push and Shove but it felt like a struggle during that period with Gavin being away and on tour.

Like she’s mentioned in previous radio interviews, Gwen says that a series of miracles has happened in her life which she credits to putting her on a new creative path, starting with the birth of her third son Apollo. She shares that Apollo has put her “in a whole new spiritual place” which has also brought on additional pressure, too. “I was trying at that time to do more music with No Doubt. Then I got pregnant, and I was like, OK, well, what am I gonna do now? I need to make some changes. There’s only so much energy.” She decided to focus her extra energy on her fashion brands before getting the call from The Voice. Gwen says she receive so much from the show and it helped revive her passion for music and songwriting. She credits Pharrell Williams for helping her get out of a “creative funk” saying, “He helped me with a lot of stuff. I was in a closed-off period before that—I couldn’t write, and I didn’t feel confident. There were hard times before the baby, personally, that were just not good. And then having Apollo, and being on the show, and being refreshed— it was just like, Whoa!”

Gwen said it’s been tough getting back into her old-self again but stresses that she’s “in a really positive place now”. While her new energy and passion for music has shocked her a little, she’s finding comfort and healing in songwriting. After finding herself in another dry spell last year while attempting to write, Gwen has found her gift again and has been channeling it into songwriting since. “In June I knew I was ready to make a record; I just wanted it. Every single time I went into the studio, I wrote a song. Every time. That’s never happened to me before. Songs don’t just come out. And now I think I have the whole record.”

Gwen also admits that it was hard transitioning into a mother and had to take time to accept her new reality. “In the beginning, I didn’t want to think of myself as a mother. I was like, ‘Wait a minute! Ain’t no hollaback girl is who I am!’ I had to learn to accept it.” Gwen knows that both being a mother and having a career are two different things but recognizes that it’s all about being yourself but with a lot more on your plate.

  1. I’m blown away by how stunning and beautiful these photos are. Gwen looks so incredible. I can’t believe after 20 years of being her fan she now looks younger than me lol.

  2. I have to say this. Gwen is having a lot of exposure this week with The Voice and she’s on Entertainment Television 24/7. It’s gonna end. In order to keep up with momentum, I’m gonna buy the single IYTLY for the second time, and I invite you to do the same if it’s within your possibilities.

Otherwise, stream the single on spotify or youtube and it doesn’t have to be obsessive, I do it whenever I feel like listening to the song with is one time a day!
