  1. Jenny, I hope you find the time to read this. After a thorough search, this was the only Billboard official statement I found regarding Youtube counts for the Billboard Hot 100: “Billboard is incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen’s streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100”.

To give an example, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” went number one on the Hot 100 because of all the users that made their own video using a 30 seconds clip of “Harlem Shake” (clips with 30 seconds or less don’t require authorization).

One could argue that Ellen’s performance is live and doesn’t use the original audio, therefore not counting for the Hot 100. However, given that The Ellen show signs an authorization to share the performance on tv broadcast and as a video on their Youtube page, I’m pretty sure it counts as a “user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio”.

  2. I wonder why they send her to Japan of all countries? I know that she is a fan of that country, but is she actually known in Japan? Like, is this even a market for her?
