Gwen on Eminem: “I’ve Always Wanted To Work With Him” (Updated)

Update!

Gwen sat down with Entertainment Tonight about spoke about recording “Kings Never Die” and getting a thank you call from Eminem himself.

“I’m driving, literally driving in the minivan with all my kids in the car… and on Bluetooth, somebody calls. And I’m like, ‘Hello?’ And it was him! And he’s like, ‘Hey just wanted to say thanks for doing the song. And I was like, ‘You don’t understand- I have all my kids in the car. You can’t call me right now. All my kids are in the car! Don’t say any bad words!’ I was literally going to soccer practice. But I was like, ‘I’m gonna make your song so cool!'”

Gwen also says that she’s having a blast being back with her fellow Voice coaches and is excited for season 9.

During her Harajuku Lovers Tea Party at BeautyCon Los Angeles yesterday, Gwen spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her latest collaboration with Eminem, “Kings Never Die”, and shared that she’s always wanted to work with him.

Gwen says that she was approached by his team for the track and she was really into it calling it “amazing”. She said that the “process was really simple” and the call came quick to be on the song. “… all of a sudden they called me and said, ‘It has to be done today’ and I was like, ‘Ah, my voice’ — I had a cough or something. I went in and I made it happen, but it was like, barely… It was like, ‘God, why does today have to be the day my voice is not happening?’ But it ended up turning out good.”

She calls Eminem a “genius” and felt very honored to work him saying “he’s very selective” about collaborations with other artists.

Even though the Southpaw soundtrack is out on July 24, you can pick up “Kings Never Die” everywhere now digitally and is currently #32 on iTunes.

  1. I think it’s really cool that she actually said something about this collaboration, because as we all know she rarely talks about anything music related these days. She seems to be genuinely excited about this collaboration and the little story about her voice is just so typically Gwen somehow haha.

  2. Eminem is primarily an ND/Gwen fan. It’s actually cool that Gwen didn’t read much on his lyrics and decided to collaborate with him. And to be fair his lyrics about her aren’t much of a diss, especially compared to other artists. Gwen is a good sport. Love her!

  3. I really like this collaration! It just seems to fit. On a side note, I really wish Gwen would stop talking about God so much, it makes her sound ignorant. It’s like listening to a smart, mature, and unique woman saying..” Jesus, take the wheel!”. Don’t mean to offend

  4. D why would it piss people off? I think it’s a good song that has decent potential. I can’t see them going out of their way to promote it though but it could be a solid top 40 hit. Hopefully there will be a video but I won’t get my hopes up.

  5. Yes, I think this could be a minor hit. I don’t see it smashing in a big way, but in case the movie does well, I can see the song doing equally ok. “Phenomenal” (the soundtrack’s first single) didn’t do too well, so we’ll have to wait and see whether people are more willing to embrace KND. I think it’s mostly appealing to Eminem’s fans and to people, who watched the movie, though. It’s probably not pop-ish enough for the general audience.

I wonder if radio will give it try… They should release a shorter radio edit that features more of Gwen’s hook and I also hope there will be a video. I don’t think Eminem and Gwen will ever perform this anywhere, though.

It’s still nice to see Gwen’s name in the iTunes top 100 again.

  6. “genius”? I’ve never questioned gwens artistry or taste in 21 years of being a fan. Aside from his stupid lyrics, even if he never even cussed, his whole style and aesthetic has been corny to me just like the artist he came up with, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park. All the dumb jocks and bros from high school LOL

  7. i really try to never complain about her collar choices but this is so disappointing. He’s so disgusting and I’m just gonna pretend this collab isn’t happening. He’s totally homophobic and misogynistic and I don’t see any genuis.

  8. I like the song even though Gwen’s part is quite small. It’s a lot better than the other stuff on the radio nowadays that’s for sure! Only thing is I don’t think it’s very hook-y. I just hope it gives Gwen’s musical career a boost, so that we may soon enjoy more songs from her. :):)

  9. Gwen never mentions God in this interview, all she said was that she prayed. Anyway she’s entitled to her beliefs and can talk about it in anyway she wants. We obviously know she’s liberal in her political views and yes, you an be a liberal Christian, (I am one myself), and she’s obviously not hurting anyone or is prejudice, so complaining about her talking about praying, God, etc. is irrelevant and disrespectful.

  10. JOHANNA,
You have your opinion and I have mine. I feel like I can express myself here. Its better than the alternativ e, directly on her personal page! Now that would be disrespectful.

  11. Yeah I agree, it’s disrespectful to tell her to stop mentioning God. She has her beliefs and we should respect her, no matter if you believe God exists to not. That’s not the point.
