Gwen Appearing on CBS’s ‘Sunday Morning’ Mar. 20 (Updated)

Check out Gwen’s profile and feature that aired this morning on CBS’s Sunday Morning with Lee Cowan. We’re treated to a look inside Gwen’s home where she shows off the awards that she’s won over the years that are kept in a sleek closet.

She opened up about the inspiration behind her new album and shared that her life blew up the day after the Grammy Awards in in 2015. “I woke up that morning and it was like my life changed forever.” Gwen went on about keeping her and Gavin’s separation a secret saying, “At that time everything was like I had no skin, it was so raw.”

“I was down all the way; you don’t go down lower than that. It was rock bottom. I was so embarrassed, you know what I mean? I was like, ‘Wow, I have to turn this into something, like, I can’t go down like this. If I can do music, then everything will be okay.'”

Instead of feeling down on herself, Gwen channeled her energy and emotions in songwriting and found herself addicted. “It was just like the confidence came to me, and it just felt like the right thing to be doing. It was proactive as opposed to, like, just getting deeper into a hole.”

After sharing some of her earlier material with her label, they showed hesitance against it and urged Gwen to possibly release something as an art project and not necessarily commercially due to it being “too personal”. “…and it really deflated me. I was like, ‘Wow, you guys, you don’t even understand what you’re doing to me right now. This was saving my life, and now you just punched me in the face, like, for saving my own life?’ That’s how it felt.”

CBS’s Sunday Morning has shared that Gwen is set to appear this coming Sunday, March 20, for an interview on her new album. CBS’s Charles Osgood joined Gwen at her home for an intimate interview about “songwriting, bouncing back after the divorce, her career and her life today.” CBS posted a clip from the interview in which admits she felt like she had hit rock-bottom after her divorce and felt embarrassed.

Gwen’s interview will air in-full this coming weekend on Sunday, March 20, on CBS at 7:00AM ET/PT.

  1. Yay, more promo (and every bit counts)! I feel another bit of promo that might get lost amidst the hoopla and euphoria of the new album ( are you reading this, Jenny? 🙂 ) is that Gwen did something quite interesting on the social media assault front, and joined LinkedIn today! She penned and posted an essay titled “The Key to Creativity—and Success—Is Truth” along with an accompanying 6 min video of her in the studio where she talks about her craft, the state of the music industry, social media, among other things. Gwen’s post has been well-received by the LinkedIn community with already well over 30K views (as of a few hours ago) and the comments/responses has been very positive ( LinkedIn is of course career-oriented, so less idle-idiocy to be found there 🙂 ). Anyway, here’s a Billboard article about this (note: according to the article, TiWtTFL has been/is being withheld from Spotify…):

  2. Honestly, I love, love, love this profile and interview with Gwen, and I actually got a little teary eyed over the whole thing. I thought it was an excellently put together segment, and so worth waking up for on a Sunday morning! So thank you, Jenny, for posting this so that everyone here can enjoy it! Love also that Gwen has opened up a house for all these interviews, which is quite rare for a star to do these days. She has such a beautiful home that is sleek, two-tone (!) and filled (but not cluttered) with things that are so “Gwen” 🙂 By the way, am I seeing lyric videos in hopefully the not too distant future for some or all of the tracks on the album??? On a related note, I recently found out that the “Misery” lyric video was created by the same guy who has directed some cool videos for The Neighborhood, including the vid for one of my fave songs, “Sweater Weather”.

    1. Aww shucks, it just occurred to me that maybe some clever video editor at CBS actually created those lyric segments to mimic the official “Misery” one, so perhaps lyric videos for album tracks do not in fact exist … bummer than 🙁

  3. Watched it again, it’s really a superb piece. I think Lee Cowan (who’s a great interviewer, by the way, so shout out to Lee!) or whoever produced this segment, might be a huge No Doubt fan, because they used so much No Doubt material in this segment (even a bit of “Settle Down”) — great promo for the lads too, lol 🙂 — and hopefully some new initiates will be moved to checked out the ND back catalog. Really liked the old school cool lens flare effect on the “Used to Love You” lyric segment, so hopefully they post the whole lyric video for UTLY on Gwen’s VEVO. Could “Truth” be a future single, or perhaps the next one?

    1. I feel like Truth would be great as a final single to conclude the album! After she releases another one or two of course.

      1. OMG, honest to gawd, I had been thinking the same exact thing (though this segment made me think it could be the next). My first thoughts were that it could have, should have been the closing track on the album, but obviously since that’s not going to happen, lol, I thought why not the last single then? Am I the only one here who thinks “Truth” is this album’s 4AM (except with the “fast-talking” style used on the verse instead of chorus)?

  4. Candid and beautiful. I think this interview sums it up pretty nicely. The interviewer really “got her” as well, which was refreshing. 🙂

  5. Guys, TIWTTFL is predicted to hit #1 exactly 20 years after Tragic Kingdom went #1. How beautiful and amazing is that? How old are we? I’m shocked!
