What a surprise! Gwen debuted her brand new song “Used To Love You” tonight in New York sponsored by MasterCard.

Before going into the new song, Gwen said she feels extremely grateful to the fans and says that sharing her personal feelings with everyone has a strong and beautiful effect on her. She thanked everyone for listening to her while she expresses her pain and love in real life and seemed extremely humble for being able to express herself.

Gwen says that she wrote “Used To Love You” recently and called it “special”. “I think this is going to be the new single.”

“Used To Love You” feels like one of Gwen’s most personal songs ever and the gorgeous backdrop video behind her reflects both sadness and confidence. She looks so beautiful and you can just feel the emotion that she has to be feeling at this time. The lyrics are so raw and personal and we admire her courage and strength by opening up and letting us in. We also like the ode to “Dreaming the Same Dream” with her “nobody taught you how to love” lyric.

Below we’ve translated the lyrics to “Used To Love You”. From what we’ve gathered, the song was co-written with J.R. Rotem, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. People also says that a close source has confirmed “Used To Love You” was produced by J.R. Rotem.

“Used To Love You” Lyrics (Official)

Never,
Thought this would happen
Gotta let it sink in,
You’re gone

Don’t know,
Know what I’m feeling
I must be dreaming,
You’re gone

Suitcase,
Bandaids,
Pulling back out the driveway
You go, I’ll stay
You can keep all the memories
I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you
I thought you loved me the most

Ooh
I don’t know why I cry,
But I think it’s cause I remember for the first time,
Since I hated you,
That I used to love you

Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you
Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you

You thought,
There were no boundaries
But you just pushed me,
Too far

I guess,
Nobody taught you,
Nobody taught you how to love

Suitcase,
Bandaids,
Pulling back out the driveway
You go, I’ll stay
You can keep all the memories
I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you
I thought you loved me the most

Ooh
I don’t know why I cry,
But I think it’s cause I remember for the first time,
Since I hated you,
That I used to love you

Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you
Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you

You know, I was the best thing that ever happened to you
Now look at what you’ve lost
You know, I was the best thing that ever happened to you
Now look at what you’ve lost

Ooh
I don’t know why I cry,
But I think it’s cause I remember for the first time,
Since I hated you,
That I used to love you

Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you
Oh, oh, oh, oh,
I used to love you

I don’t know why I cry,
I don’t, I don’t, I don’t
I don’t know why I used to love you
I don’t, I don’t, I don’t
I don’t know why I cry
I don’t, I don’t, I don’t
I don’t know why I used to love you
I don’t, I don’t, I don’t

  1. It was so good!! Don’t know if I would call it a ballad though? It seemed like a mid tempo song? Anyway hope we hear the studio version real soon!

  2. Wow what a song! Like I said on twitter, I wasn’t expecting for something like this. I got shivers. I never thought Gwen would open her heart like this to everyone. I think interscope would be complete fools to not release this.

Jenny, your post about this song is very sensitive and moving. Beautiful words. Well done!

  3. I think the lyric is:
“I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you.
I thought you loved me the most.”

    Super feeling this!

  4. I’m also loving the instrumental so much! Great song. By the way almost everyone on the ATRL forums are loving the song. I hope that’s a good sign. Interscope needs to ACT now and release it next Friday. Don’t let this leak please.

  5. The only part that might be bad about her releasing it this week is that the lives shows won’t start for another 3 weeks on the voice. Hopefully she would perform it on a few talk shows and do radio interviews before then.

  6. Yeah but it would give time for the song to build up too. I guess the song may be better received by The Voice audience too. I hope so. She deserves a new hit.

  7. WOW, that was absolutely personal… so strong, I like it, definitely a grower. Sounds very different from what’s on the radio now imo. It also sounds like “4 In The Morning” at times. It’s soft and relaxing. Sounds very 80’s and also early 90’s. I’m worried about the commercial performance of this song because it sounds very adult… nevertheless, it’s catchy at the same time. Anyway, at this point I think Gwen is just doing what she wants, she seems more confident of herself and I love that. I want her to do what the hell she wants and and bring back the world good music, lol.

And I have to say, Gavin don’t deserve this kind of sad songs… Because he don’t deserve Gwen.

  8. man, the lyric is so strong and the instrument is definitely helped channeling the song a lot. feeling some 80’s vibe with drum sampler and acoustic tom drumming. it’s gonna be a hit for sure.

  9. Wow she cuts deep…. Just raw emotion straight to the point… U could definitely tell the difference when she is more involve in the song writing… At this point, whether it becomes a hit or not doesn’t really matter. She is an icon already. She can do whatever she please….

  10. After reading the lyrics and all the reactions on this song i was SO ready to love this song but well…I do love that Gwen is finding her voice again in meaningful lyrics and depth but to me the song just doesn’t really overwhelm. 🙁 Hopefully it’ll grow on me.

  11. Cool song, very pop-ish and catchy and exactly what you expect to hear on your favourite radio station these days. I can see why this will probably be a single. I think it’s a lot better than BDL and STF, but not as good as SAW. It lacks some sort of climax imho, but I am generally not a huge fan of these kind of midtempo songs anyways. I am just glad that Gwen seems to love it and that this is probably exactly what she wants to release at this point. So yeah, just go for it and release it already as long as the internet is still buzzing over it. Don’t repeat the SAW mistake again.

  12. Why do all of her new songs just repeat, repeat, repeat? Also, “Ohhhh an ooooooh” is not a lyric. Maybe the recorded version will be better.

  13. I was on Hollywood Boulevard the other day and was thinking WHY THE HELL DOESNT GWEN HAVE A STAR ON HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD YET?!!! Fans, what should I do about this?! I’m fucking close to going to LA city hall and complaining that she deserves one already!!!!!! Who agrees?!!!

  14. I hate seeing the negative comments online regarding her appearance and voice. It makes me sad that every article I click on has a bunch of ridiculous comments. Gwen is such a talented, sweet person. I wish people weren’t so petty.

  15. I personally think these are some of Gwen’s best lyrics in years. Raw powerful full of emotion takes me back to TK and ROS

  16. The more I listen, the more I fall in love! This is the Gwen I’ve missed! BDL and SAW are great songs, they just don’t feel “Gwenny” enough for me. SAF is a cute bop but I want emotional ballads this year and I feel UTLY fits perfectly!!

    1. I agree. I think this is the best song she’s released in awhile. Her lyrics reminded me of how much I love her cause she’s so honest and real. It’s bittersweet for sure but it made me feel better seeing her so confident onstage. <3

  17. Lisa, I know, it makes me mad to read certain comments but I think some people only post to get reactions from fans. The best to do is ignore it.

  18. It’s a good pop song. I guess I’m just missing No Doubt. Their work seemed more authentic. 5 writers on the track make it hard for me to believe the “raw” lyrics came straight from Gwen.

  19. I’m in love with “Used to Love You”. Can’t wait to be able to download it so I can sing it at the top of my lungs in the car. Hehe.

  20. No., songwriting isn’t just about the lyrics. And I’ve read that when you have a team in the same room they all get writing credits, even if one of them didn’t get involved. That said those lyrics are full of Gwenisms, imo. It feels almost like I’m reading her diary.

  21. I am mesmerized with the background video. So powerful and sad. I like the color-tipped hair better out of her face like that too.

If Gwen’s team is smart, they would capitalize on the buzz this song already has and release it next week.

  22. I love this song!!! Can’t stop listening.. I love love the chorus, it’s one of those that doesn’t smash you over the head, it worms its way in and doesn’t get out haha. Can’t wait to hear the studio version. I think it could really be big if marketed right.

I noticed under the lyrics on genius.com it’s listed as the 4th track of a TBD EP? I kinda doubt that’s official, but I really hope this would just be released as a single and not unearth STF and BDL again.. I just don’t think those should be associated. This song is on a different level imo.

  23. I don’t know what I should think of the song. It’s good, but I liked “Start A War” so much, becuase it sounds so classy, so stripped down. I would love to have it as a single… And I think the lyrics of “Used To Love You” are kinda hard – and not very “deep”… Hopefully SAW will be on the record…

    1. She doesn’t even need a lyric video / final video (for now). Just put the audio on youtube and let it slowly seep into people’s consciousness.

  24. This is so beautiful, Gwen is so beautiful in every way and I’m in love with this song.
I have just seen this by the top of Facebook’s global trending news feed..
That’s a positive sign and it seems to be getting very positive reviews!

  25. Ugh why don’t they take advantage of the momentum and just put this on iTunes now? Obviously people like it/are interested in it… It just seems like they are wasting so much potential again.

  26. I like the lyrics, I think the song needs something a little more catchy added to it. Seems like a good starting point, now add that sound/hook that knocks our socks off Gwen!!

  27. Releasing it now wouldn’t do any good unless she’s ready to promote it right away. You people tend to forget gwen isn’t a big star anymore. She’ll need to have lots of scheduled promo to make it successful

  28. btw….side note on comments about it being smart to release music now. no, it wouldn’t. i hate hate personal life gossip, but im just gonna say it. whatever. sorry. why do ya’ll think she’s been holding on to all this new music for? duh. shits been brewing for a while and im sure she wants all this shit to be final before any more revenues/profit come in from this solo record and ‘someone’ trys to come after more $$. that makes sense. and now even more so while it all started officially happening(the divorce) these hard moments inspired new music on the tail end of the song writing process for this record. i bet the best songs on the album are the last ones written & recorded. its craziness! and sad for gwennie <3 but this is gonna be such a good one. oi. k dont bash my gossip theory :/

  29. cellophane girl– that makes a lot of sense about these delays– she needs to finish the divorce so she can keep her profit. Smart.

  30. Cellophane Girl, she performed it so obviously Gwen can’t be too bothered about singing about her divorce whilst the news is still fresh… so it would be no different to release it and let people talk and get $!

  31. The song has already been sent to radio stations. So I’m sure it will be on iTunes tonight or Friday… I hope it doesn’t leak too soon though. But imo it would be a good move to release it tonight and announce it on The Voice during commercial breaks.

  32. She posted on IG it was on the radio- they gotta drop it asap! They only have a small window before it ends up online. (Also, I’m dying to hear the studio version so andele!!!)

  33. when a song, any song gives me chills and goosebumps I know its good and this song is fantastic!! I just hate that she felt the need to write it. I feel for her, but she’s gonna get through this. Love u gwen! 😀
