Everyone at Beacon Street Online would like to wish Gwen and her second successful solo album, The Sweet Escape, a very happy 9th anniversary. The Sweet Escape came out on this day back in 2006 and spawned the singles “Wind It Up”, “The Sweet Escape”, “Early Winter”, “4 In The Morning” and “Now That You Got It” (which featured a new remix version featuring Damian Marley). The album features some of Gwen’s most gorgeous ballads (including “Wonderful Life”, which was used in her L fragrance commercial) and hip-hop beats (in both “Orange County Girl” and “Breakin’ Up”).

After the success of her debut solo album, Gwen was encouraged to get back into the studio (after giving birth to her first son, Kingston) and ended up releasing what was said as leftover tracks from the first record. With a working title of L.A.M.B. Part 2, Gwen again joined up with Pharrell Willams (after the success of “Hollaback Girl”) in July of 2005.

The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts selling 243,000 copies in it’s first week. The Sweet Escape has sold close to 1.7 million so far in the US alone. A successful world tour also followed, which brought Gwen solo overseas for the first time due to her first pregnancy after the US leg of the Harajuku Lovers Live tour.

Gwen has returned back with “The Sweet Escape” a couple of times for special occasions even with No Doubt at her side during the band’s Tea Party for Japan hosted back in 2011 and most recently last year during a special live showcase presented by The Voice at HYDE in Los Angeles.

  1. Happy birthday, beautiful LAMB spawn, The Sweet Escape. Listened to it so many times and still do. Thanks to this album we got to hear Wonderful Life and U Started It, some of the greatest songs Gwen ever wrote and it would be a crime for them not to see the light of day 🙂

  2. I agree, they should have released this album on vinyl. Just imagine the album artwork in that format. It would look killer! Aww!

  3. 4 in the Morning is such an incredible song. I don’t remotely care that it wasn’t a huge hit… its one of those songs where the lyrics feel like they’re written for my life. Hope that we see more material like this on the new project! Also…. Yummy was everything to my 16 year old self lol. Such a cool song.

  4. I love Yummy, 4 in the morning, TSE, Wonderful Life, Early Winter and Orange County Girl (especially how it was live on the HL tour). Great songs! A few songs on the album felt like fillers though. Probably because the cd was rushed a little bit.
On another note I cannot believe it has been 9 years already… Time is going by so fast!

  5. It makes me sad we won’t get to hear gwens material from last year because she did two “cooky” songs as she described with Pharrel. Wonder if any of them sounded like Yummy. I think they were titled Woah and Heart Shape
